With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Jennifer “Jen” Schrift, of Portage, Pennsylvania, a beloved wife, teacher, and mentor, who died unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of music, kindness, and inspiration that touched generations.
Jen was the heart of the North Star School District, where she taught Instrumental Music for grades 5–12 and Chorus for grades 9–12. Her classroom was more than just a place to learn notes and melodies—it was a haven for creativity, self-expression, and unconditional support.
In a statement shared by North Star High School, the district wrote:
“It is with much sympathy and regret that I share with you the passing of our High School and Middle School music teacher, Jen Schrift. Mrs. Schrift played a vital role in sharing her gift of music with many of our students.”
Jen was more than just a music teacher—she was a role model, a confidante, and for many, a life-changing presence. Former student Cody Armstrong wrote:
“Jennifer Schrift was legitimately one of the most supportive teachers I ever had. She grew my love of music and shaped who I am as a person. What a tragic loss for her family, friends, students, and the whole music community. She was one of the absolute best people I’ve ever met.”
Jen had a unique ability to see potential in every student. Her passion for music was matched only by her deep care for people. She brought joy into every lesson, led with compassion, and always made time to listen.
She is survived by her loving husband, Marty, who stood beside her through every note and every performance. She also leaves behind countless former students, colleagues, and friends whose lives she helped shape through her generous spirit and unwavering belief in the power of music.
The North Star School District is offering counseling support to any student grieving this immense loss. For assistance, please contact the High School Guidance Office at 814-629-9889 or email mpelesky@nscougars.com.
As her school mourns, and the halls fall silent without her music, her legacy lives on—in every instrument played, every song sung, and every student who learned to believe in themselves because Mrs. Schrift believed in them first.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later time.
